Sigma Alpha is a professional agricultural sorority that promotes scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship among its members. The sorority was founded in 1978 at the Ohio State University by five women who wanted an alternative to the social Greek sorority system. Since that time, Sigma Alpha has become a national organization consisting of more than 80 chapters, comprised of undergraduate and alumnae members. Today, more than 6,000 members have been initiated into Sigma Alpha Sorority. We're growing steadily as others in agriculture learn about us. Sigma Alpha is a member of the Professioal Fraternity Association (PFA), a national organization of professional Greek letter organizations and The Consortium of Collegiate Agricultural Organizations. Both Sigma Alpha Sorority and the Sigma Alpha Alumni Association are affiliates of American Agri-Women. We support Ag in the Classroom as our national service project. You'll find Sigma Alpha members standing out as leaders on their campuses and in the workforce. We are dedicated to the motto: Women Excelling in Agriculture. The Gamma Chapter at Michigan State offers members the opportunity to live in a house designated to our sorority. This helps to create the bond of sisterhood and friendship among our members. During your college years at Michigan State, Sigma Alpha is concerned with promoting your career development. Sigma Alpha has an agriculture and natural resources focus but we encourage all majors to apply. We build leaders in all fields of study through the activities and opportunities we provide. Although it sounds like a lot of work, Sigma Alpha is devoted to building lifelong friendships and a bond of sisterhood. For this reason, we plan many social events throughout the year as well as participate in University and College organized functions. Having fun is part of the college experience and allows you the opportunity to meet new people from other organizations and groups around campus.
